3rd Annual Bark in the Park Dog Festival 2007 -
A Huge
Success!
Thank
you to all who attended Bark in the Park. We started out with clouds overhead,
and had some light rain, but we had a wonderful Northwest day.
There were over 30 vendors displaying their wares, dog competitions, agility
and flyball
demonstrations, and fun for all. Over $5,000
was raised for the Off Leash Dog Park.
Again thank you to all who helped make this
event a success.

Ceremonial Groundbreaking -
Rotary Revs up Park Effort
by
Elaine Walker - News editor
A ceremonial
groundbreaking took place earlier this month and
work is expected to start soon on the Ace of Hearts
Rotary Park, a 4-acre site on H Avenue that will
include an off-leash dog park, a Little League
baseball field and an extensive wetland and pond
system.
“We’re just waiting for permits,” said Jonn Lunsford
of the Anacortes Parks and Recreation Department.
The park is the centennial project of the Anacortes
Rotary Club. Partnering with the club are the city
of Anacortes and the organization Fidalgo Islanders
for Dogs Off-leash and Anacortes Little League.

“We’ll all be helping with it as much as we can,”
said FIDO member Amy Terhune.
Lunsford said that the city is working with FIDO to
provide an alternative off-leash park location while
construction takes place at Ace of Hearts Rotary
Park. He said that the likely temporary dog park
site, pending insurance approval, is a privately
owned field at Q Avenue and Ninth Street. Terhune
said that FIDO members will help install a temporary
fence at the site.
Earlier this year FIDO hosted the Bark in the Park
event to raise money for the park, and the Anacortes
Rotary Club is currently conducting a fund-raising
raffle. Rotarian Duane Clark said that tickets are
$10 each.
The prizes are $500 gift certificates from Food
Pavilion, Gere-A-Deli, Sebo’s Do-It Center, Frontier
Industries, Ace Hardware and Penguin Coffee. Clark
said that the first-prize winner chooses three $500
gift certificates or $900 cash, the second-place
winner can choose two certificates or $600 and the
third-place winner gets one certificate or $300.
The
drawing is Sunday, Aug. 6 at the Anacortes Arts
Festival. To buy a ticket, call Clark at 293-8088.
The city is seeking a grade and fill permit for site
preparation at the park. According to the city’s
application, erosion control and best management
practices will be provided as required by the Public
Works Department; dust control measures will be
provided as required by the Public Works Department
and Building Department; and a complete dog park
management plan addressing herbicide, pesticide and
fertilizer application, as well as dog waste
disposal, must be developed by the parks department
9/20/04 Proposed Plan for the H Avenue Park

The City of Anacortes plans to expand the current H Avenue Dog Park into a combined baseball field and dog park. Click here to view the
2004 proposed plan (approx. 300k). The plan calls for a paved entry road and parking, a 5' wide perimeter walking trail, a children's play area, restrooms, as well as creek restoration and an interpretive trail. The dog park portion will be 1.5 acres (nearly similar in size to the current area) and will have three double gate access points. In addition, a covered picnic bench shelter and dog watering/washing station will enhance the park. Currently, this plan has been approved by the Anacortes City Council but no date has been set for the start of construction. If you have any comments, please e-mail us at info@anacortesdogpark.com. Keep checking for updates.
